On Palm Sunday morning at 9:30 you are invited to join the Palm Sunday Procession. As a sign of Christian unity and to celebrate our Lord's triumphal entry into Jerusalem, we will be joining with members of other churches in processing from our parking lot to First Christian Church. Please plan to be a part of this special event.
The day before Good Friday is called Maundy Thursday. The word “Maundy” comes from the Latin word mandatum, which means “commandment.” In the gospel of John, Jesus makes this statement during the Last Supper: “I am with you only a little longer. ... I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:33-35, NRSV).
Maundy Thursday should always be a time of showing loving concern for one another and of partaking of Holy Communion. That is what the Lord asked of his disciples and asks of us. Join in a time of reflection and celebration of the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper at the Maundy Thursday Communion Service, which will be held in our sanctuary on April 5 at 7:00 p.m.
The Easter Egg Hunt is planned for Saturday, April 7, at 1:00 p.m. at the home of the Leones, 1918 Country Club Drive. Members of the Presbyterian Youth Connection are sponsoring this event for the children of the church and their friends. Bring a basket and join the search for eggs and goodies.
It is a tradition here at FPC is to have an early worship service on Easter in the sanctuary at 8:00 a.m., led by the Presbyterian Youth Connection, to usher in Easter.
Following the early service the Presbyterian Men will provide a continental breakfast for the congregation in the Williams Family Center.
The Mission Committee is coordinating work projects at Trinity Care Center and Shepherd’s House on Saturday, April 14. Meet at the church at 7:30 a.m. to carpool to our destinations. Time estimated to complete projects (depending on the number of workers) is 6 hours maximum. Those wishing to eat lunch may brown bag it or pick up some fast food close by.
Bob Huffines, who is in charge of the projects and has been in touch with the agencies, believes we will have enough hand tools, equipment and materials to expedite the projects. The costs associated with the projects will be covered with funds from the 2011 church rummage sale.
At Trinity Care Center the work involves painting the kitchen cabinets by removing doors and hardware, lightly sanding existing painted surfaces and repainting exterior surfaces only, no inside painting of cabinets.
At Shepherd's House we will be working on a 6’ x 9’ bathroom: painting walls and ceiling. (painting over existing paint), removing existing lighting fixtures and installing 2 new lighting fixtures, removing an old mirror, installing a new mirror, installing 12" x 12" tile squares over the existing flooring, and painting and installing quarter round molding.
If you want to help with these work projects, contact Bob Huffines.
Future mission work projects:
Haven of Hope continues to compile a list of projects. Estimation is for a small crew to work for approximately 8 hours on a Saturday.
Sunset Gap work dates are set for Friday, June 1, and Saturday, June 2. For those that can, we will travel over on Thursday, May 31 (departure time TBD). More details to follow. But please go ahead and save the dates for the Sunset Gap mission trip.
Mission Sunday, including Good Sam, is April 15. The date has been changed from the second Sunday of the month until the third Sunday of April because of Easter. Special needs this month are peanut butter and cereal as well as canned goods and pasta items. Toilet tissue, laundry soap and dish soap can also be used. Buy some of these items, or any other nonperishable food items, as you shop each week and bring them to the worship service on Mission Sunday.
This year the Christian Education Committee will team up with the Family and Community Activities Committee to host a Church Picnic on April 15 at Frazier McEwen Park to honor those who volunteer in the Christian Education Program at FPC. The church picnic last fall was a big success, and we wanted to do it again, this time honoring our volunteers. We will return to the same pavilion next to the baseball stadium. There will be hamburgers and hotdogs provided, but we ask those attending to bring a pot luck addition that blends in with the picnic theme. There will also be games, and the walking trail was very popular last fall.
On April 28 we will have another morning of assembling dresses for girls and shorts for boys in Africa. We need help cutting patterns, cutting fabric, pressing, matching trim to fabric and packaging for ready-to-sew dresses. It is nice if you can bring a machine to sew but not necessary since we can do the sewing at home.
We know a missionary who will deliver these garments for us so that we don't have to pay postage for shipping.
Coffee and treats will be furnished from 9:00 until 11:00 a.m. Please join us.
